A Fantasy Adventurer’s Day of Elder Scrolls Meals

In my neverending quest to bring the magic of fantasy worlds into everyday life, I decided to spend a day cooking and eating Elder Scrolls meals from the Official Elder Scrolls Cookbook. A little cookbook review at the end of this post.

saltrice porridge

Breakfast: Saltrice Porridge

I started the day making saltrice porridge for breakfast. Rice porridge is something we eat on Christmas, so that is what it tasted like to me. Or maybe it was the fact I drenched it in cinnamon and honey.

pea soup and cabbage biscuits

Lunch: Pea Soup with Cabbage Biscuits

I can only describe it as “basic pea soup”, which I cook often anyway. The cabbage biscuits were surprisingly tasty with the soup. Best fresh with butter! Otherwise they were a bit bland to my liking (… didn’t stop me from consuming the whole tray over two days). Next time I’ll add some herbs and maybe more salt. Don’t skip the bacon (or vegan “bacon” if you’re a dirty little vegetarian hippie like myself), it ties the whole meal together.

Snowberry crostata

Dessert: Snowberry Crostata

For dessert and as an afternoon snack, I had snowberry crostata (that didn’t want to be photographed properly, shy thing). Instead of cranberries I used frozen lingonberries that I’d foraged a while back. They taste quite the same. The crostata was tasty without being too sweet, and it was very, very filling. Why no sweetrolls, you ask? I don’t have the right pans for those.

Elder Scrolls cookbook with glass of kombucha in front

Drinks!

The book has a good amount of mead recipes. But since I had kombucha ready, I decided to try the the mead spice recipes and OHMYGOD best kombucha ever!

One problem was, that many of the drink recipes need “weird” ingredients that can’t be bought here, like yarrow and dandelion root. Usually I forage these but timing wasn’t right for that, so I used replacements.

For dinner I had more pea soup and cabbage biscuits since there was so much food left and frankly, wasn’t in the mood for more cooking.

A short review of the Elder Scrolls Cookbook

I’d give the book a 4/5 with this experience. The pictures and ideas are great, and the book is absolutely beautiful. Some little mistakes were in the book. If you’re and experienced cook, this book is mostly for inspiration and immersion. I did use more spices and did little tweaks here and there to my liking, since I found the food recipes quite… bland. If you’re a beginner cook, this book has simple recipes to experiment with. My favorite things in the book are the spice mixes and the mead recipes (… that I use for kombucha). I’d still recommend it to everyone who wants some Elder Scrolls magic in their life, whether it’s for cooking or just for lore.
